Chapter Sixteen

It was a gray, blustery Friday morning, the last day of the summer holidays for Father Cochran, and by extension, for Paige. Jaded, she stood forlornly in front of the full-length floor dressing mirror in the elegant bedroom she had shared with him since their relationship dramatically shed its platonic nature and invited in the beast. There was a frown on her face as she gazed contemplatively at the unkempt bed and the duvet cover that lay halfway between the bed and the floor. Pouting, she turned her gaze away and concentrated on her reflection in the mirror, relishing the way the ashen G-string gripped her ass.

She reckoned quietly that she looked beguiling but couldn’t dwell on the thought now. She loathed this moment. The very thought of leaving this lovely villa, where she had primped and glittered like gold in the last couple of weeks, hurt her. Reluctantly, she slipped on her bra and blinked at the sudden realization that she was going to miss waking in his arms.

“Summer love,” she hissed. Delightful, short-lived, a veritable heartbreaker.

She lifted the flimsy see-through black blouse she was determined to wear this morning absently and paused, a frown on her face as the sound of running water in the adjoining bathroom ceased at that exact moment.

“Darn,” she mumbled as the door swung open and a surprisingly groomed Father Cochran, in a beige-colored, knee-length house robe, stepped into the bedroom. His slightly protruding stomach was camouflaged by the large robe, his hairy arms seemingly bristling, his face serene.

“I can see you’re still not dressed,” he said humorlessly. “It’s a good thing you had the bathroom first.”

Paige pursed her lips. “It’s a lousy morning anyway,” she muttered under her breath, not referring to the weather but to the unremarkable end of her memorable vacation in Cape Cod. She fastened her black bra, taking time over it, and then gazed at her reflection in the mirror.

Why couldn’t it last a little longer? She fretted in silence. Until now, she had felt like a girl in love, happy and fulfilled. Sex with the priest had become a holiday staple once the initial barrier was broken, and it was exquisite. Now, she was left reeling with an illicit desire to prolong it. She frowned.

“Sex,” she whispered. “Oh, Christ.”

These past weeks had inevitably stirred a passionate reawakening in her, like a potent medicine in the blood. Now it was going to leave her hanging, pretty much like everything else in her life.

“Darn.” She sighed and looked up as Father Cochran discarded his robe and turned, bare-buttock, in the direction of the wardrobe.

In the uneasy silence of the bedroom, she puckered her lips and gazed at his reflection in the mirror as he slipped on his white boxers, then hitched up his trousers, and tucked his shirt into it almost absent-mindedly.

“Are you ready?” he said.

She was not. However, not wanting to betray any emotion, she nodded.

“Okay, I’ll wait for you downstairs;” he said, shrugged into his jacket and shuffled out of the room.
